I Coldplay nascono nel 1998 da una serie di incontri allo University College of London. Debuttano sulla scena a Manchester, in occasione di una rassegna per giovani Band in cerca di contratto. Di lì a poco riescono ad autoprodurre un disco che vale anche come demo per cercare contratti: Safety è un EP e viene stampato con una tiratura di 500 pezzi.
